Five years ago, we launched Google Cardboard, a simple cardboard viewer that everyone can use to experience virtual reality (VR). While we have seen a decline in overall Cardboard usage over time and are no longer actively developing the Google VR SDK, we still see consistent use of entertainment and education experiences, such as YouTube and Expeditions. , and we want to make sure that Cardboard’s flawless functionality, accessible approach all of the virtual reality remains available.
Today, we are releasing the Open Source Cardboard Project to enable the developer community to continue to build Cardboard experiences and support their applications for an ever-increasing diversity of smartphone solutions and configurations. We believe that an open source model, with additional contributions from us, is the best way for developers to continue creating experiences for Cardboard. We have already seen the success of this approach with our Cardboard Manufacturer Kit, an open source project to enable third-party manufacturers to design and build their own unique compatible VR viewers, and we look forward to seeing where the developer community is going to lead Cardboard .
What is included in the open source project
Google provides libraries so that developers can create their Cardboard applications for iOS and Android and bring virtual reality experiences to Cardboard viewers. The open source project provides APIs for head tracking, lens distortion rendering, and entry management. Google has also included an Android QR code library, so applications can pair any Cardboard viewer without depending on the Cardboard application.
An open source model will allow the community to continue to improve Cardboard support and expand its functionality, for example by supporting new smartphone display configurations and Cardboard viewers as they become available. Google indicates its intention to continue contributing to the Open Source Cardboard project by publishing new features, including an SDK package for Unity.
